Christmas in south-eastern Sicily is an authentic experience, shaped by ancient traditions, festive villages, and rituals passed down through generations. In the area around Arucimeli, between Ragusa, Modica, Scicli, and the inland towns, Christmas is deeply felt and widely celebrated.
Here, Christmas is more than decoration — it is a story, a journey through history, faith, and everyday life of the past.
Living Nativity scenes
One of the most evocative Christmas traditions in the area is the living nativity scene. These are not simple performances, but detailed historical reconstructions set in historic centers, natural caves, or stone villages.
Among the most famous are the living nativity of Ispica in the Cava d’Ispica, the one in Modica’s historic quarters, and those staged in the small towns of the Iblean Mountains.
Villages and flavors
During the Christmas season, villages come alive with lights, small markets, and religious celebrations. Ragusa Ibla, Scicli, and Modica reveal a quieter and more authentic charm.
Traditional sweets such as buccellati and almond pastries appear on local tables, together with honey, citrus fruits, and local wine.
